Introducing Yourself

Now that you have a list of potential colleges, it’s time to contact the coach at each school. The best way to do this is to send a videotape along with a letter of introduction and résumé. The tape should be from one of your better games. Coaches are busy people, so only make a copy of the section of the game in which you are featured.

The letter should be personalized and to the point. Take the time to find out the coaches’ names, and never start a letter with “Dear Coach:” or something equally generic. In the body of the letter, state your interest in attending that college (again, don’t go generic—make sure you name that college) and playing on their team. Describe your personal work ethics and motivation.

Make sure you include the following information in the letter:

  • Name

  • Address

  • Phone, email, fax

  • Date of birth

  • Position played

  • SAT/ACT scores

  • GPA

Make your introduction letter brief. Save the details and game stats for your athletic résumé.
