Appalachian State University Athletics
Appalachian
State University , founded in 1899 as Watauga Academy, is located in
Boone, NC, in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Appalachian State
has an enrollment of approximately 14,343 students, with a student to
faculty ratio of 19:1. Appalachian State offers 95 undergraduate majors
and 81 graduate majors.
Appalachian State placed fourth among the South’s top public
universities and 12th among public and private universities in the South
in U.S. News & World Report’s 2004 America’s Best Colleges
Guide. Appalachian has ranked in the top 15 among southern universities
since the rankings first appeared in 1986.
The Athletic teams at Appalachian State University compete at the NCAA
Division I level and are members of the Southern Conference. The football
team competes at the Division I-AA level.

Recent Highlights:
- The Appalachian State cross country teams both finished in the top
three at the Asics/Winthrop University Invitational. The women's team
finished second and the men's team picked up third.
- After rewriting the Appalachian State University record book with
343 all-purpose yards and four touchdowns, Appalachian State wide-receiver
DaVon Fowlkes was recently named a Weekly National All-Star by 1-AA.org.
- In March 2004, ASU wrestler Jason Jones was named All-Southern Conference.
- In May 2004, the men's and women's teams claimed the Southern Conference
Outdoor Track and Field championship.
- 17 ASU student-athletes were recognized by the TIAA-CREF Academic
All- Conference teams for the winter 2003-2004. To be eligible, an
athlete must have a 3.2 cumulative GPA and competed in at least one-half
of their team's competitions during the winter.
- Seniors Jordan Arnold and Amber Handy were named to the So-Con All
Tournament Team following ASU's run for the consolation finals of
the 2004 Southern Conference Softball Championship.
