Bloomsburg University Athletics

Bloomsburg University Athletics Bloomsburg University (BU), a four-year public university, is one of 14 members of Pennsylvania's State System of Higher Education. Founded in 1939 as the "Bloomsburg Literary Institute", BU's beautiful 282-acre campus overlooks the town of Bloomsburg, PA in north-central Pennsylvania.

BU students choose from 63 undergraduate majors, 38 undergraduate minors, 18 graduate programs leading to master's degrees and a doctorate in audiology. Several certificate programs are offered for professional educators.

BU has an enrollment of 7,300 undergraduate and 740 graduate students with a faculty-to-student ratio of 20:1. Classes at BU are taught by professors, not graduate assistants.

The 'Huskies' of Bloomsburg University compete in the NCAA Division II (Division I wrestling) Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.

Recent Highlights:

  • Bloomsburg University men's basketball players Matt Jefferson and Billy Bryan have been named to the 2005-06 All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division team. Jefferson was named to the All-PSAC East first team, while Bryan was named to the second team.

  • Bloomsburg University 's women's basketball player Jamie Kauczka has been named to the All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division First Team for the 2005-06 season. It is the second consecutive year that Kauczka has been named to the All-Conference team. She was named to the second team in 2004-05.

  • Bloomsburg University 's Justin Shepherd finished 19th at the NCAA Division II Cross Country National Championships to earn All-American Honors. Shepherd's time of 32:24 put him 19th out of the 172 competitors. He finished second out of all Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) competitors and also out of the East Region.

  • The Bloomsburg field hockey team won three consecutive national titles in 2002, 2003 and 2004. The Huskies have won 12 NCAA titles under current coach Jan Hutchinson, who is in her 28 th season at Bloomsburg.

  • Four members of the Bloomsburg University field hockey team have been named to the 2005 Dartfish/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division II All-American teams. Junior midfielder Maribeth Brozena , sophomore goalie Tracey Hudak and senior midfielder Kristi Ney were awarded first team All-American honors while freshman forward Jamie Vanartsdalen was awarded second team honors.

  • Three Bloomsburg University swimmers have qualified for the 2006 NCAA Championships. Travis Backenstoe and Chris Rumfelt; Dianna Smith qualified for the women.

  • The Bloomsburg University men's and women's track teams finished out the indoor portion of their season at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships. For the women, Beth Schwing took fourth place in the 3000-meter final. On the men's side, Greg McGhee took placed fifth in the finals of the 200-meter event; in the men’s mile run, Dave Sandford took a place on the podium, finishing sixth.

  • BU’s Mike Spaid won the 2006 Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) Championship at heavyweight to lead the Huskies to a fourth-place finish at the conference tournament. Spaid, along with Mike Sees qualified for the NCAA Championships yesterday after semifinal wins. Joining them at the national tournament will be Jim Bertulis, who received a bid with a third-place finish at 174 pounds, Brad Forbes, at 141 pounds, and Aric Fuhrman in the 157 pound weight class. Forbes and Fuhrman earned two of the conference's five wild card spots.
