Recent Highlights:

  • Boston College freshman linebacker Brian Toal was named 2004 Big East Rookie of the Year by a vote of the league's coaches, while teammate Mathias Kiwanuka earned 2004 Defensive Player of the Year honors. Toal started the final seven games of the season and finished second on the team in tackles with 70. His tackles for loss added up to 92 yards in lost yardage. Kiwanuka, a unanimous selection for the All-Big East first team, helped the Eagles rank 15th nationally this week in scoring defense, yielding only 16.3 points per game.
  • The BC men’s hockey team recently won the Florida College Classic. A double overtime goal from junior Chris Collins led the Boston College Eagles (9-3-3, 4-1-3) to a 2-1 victory over the St. Cloud State Huskies (8-10-2, 4-8-0) in the championship game of the 2004 Florida College Classic. The FCC was noted as one of the most competitive holiday tournaments in college hockey this season, as three of its four competitors were ranked nationally.
  • The BC Women's Sailing Team ended the fall season with an impressive 4th place finish at the Women's Atlantic Coast Championships.
  • Freshman Greg Avallon (Beverly, Mass.) and senior Dave Giulietti (Farmington, Conn.) were named to the 2004 All-America Men's Giant Slalom Second Team. Avallon and Giulietti's top-15 finishes propelled the Eagles to an 11th-place overall finish in the 2004 USCSA Nationals. Freshman Kara Hoisington (Carrabassett Valley, Maine), senior Erica Pylman (Old Forge City, N.Y.) and senior Jennifer Runco (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) have been named to the All-America Women's Individual Combined Second Team.
  • Boston College men's soccer co-captain Guy Melamed was named to the NSCAA/adidas men's 2004 Division I All-America second team. It is the second time Melamed has earned All-America honors from NSCAA/Adidas.
  • The Boston College track and field teams started their season with a bang recently, as both the men's and women's squads earned victories over Harvard at the Gordon Track & Tennis Center.
  • Boston College cross country runner Maria Cicero placed 15th in the 6k race at the NCAA Championships held in November at Indiana State University. Cicero finished the 6k race with a time of 20:48.1. The top 30 finishers in the race earn the All-American honor. This fall is the third season that Cicero has been named All-American. The senior runner has one year of athletic eligibility remaining as she red-shirted her junior year due to injury. Therefore, Cicero will have a chance to gain her fourth All-American accolade in four years next fall season.
  • Boston College junior defender Kristen Madden and senior midfielder Kerri Doherty earned a spot on the 2004 STX/NFHCA Division I All-America team as announced today by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA). Madden, who was a second team selection last year, earned a spot on the first team this year. Doherty is a second team selection; it is her first such honor.
