Young University is a private university that seeks to develop students
of faith, intellect and character who have the skills and the desire
to continue learning and to serve others throughout their lives. Tracing
its roots to Utah’s rich pioneer heritage and to Brigham Young
Academy, the original school established in 1875, the university continues
to provide an outstanding education in an atmosphere consistent with
the ideals and principles of its sponsor, The Church of Jesus Christ
of Latter-day Saints. BYU is located 45 miles south of Salt Lake City
in Provo, Utah. The university’s approximately 600-acre campus
includes 333 buildings: 112 for academic programs, 61 for administration
and physical plant services and 160 for student housing. BYU students
come from all 50 states, the District of Columbia and more than 130
countries. Full-time day enrollment for winter semester 2003 totaled
29,374, with another 2,868 part-time day students. Of the full-time
day students, 27,616 are undergraduates and 1,758 are graduate students.
Of the 1,964 international students enrolled at BYU during winter semester
2003, 21.6 percent (425) are from the Far East, 17.9 percent (352) from
Canada, 14.4 percent (282) from South America, 12.6 percent (247) from
Europe, 11.8 percent (232) from Central America and Mexico, 8.5 percent
(167) from Eastern Europe and Russia, 6 percent (117) from the Middle
East, 4.5 percent (88) from Africa and 2.7 percent (54) from the South
Pacific. Of the total students, about 53 percent are men and 47 percent
are women. Seventy-four percent of the student body is single; 32.9
percent of the men and 18.1 percent of the women are married.
Undergraduate college and schools are as follows: Biology and Agriculture,
Business School, Continuing Education, Education, Engineering and Technology,
Family, Home and Social Sciences, Fine Arts and Communications, General
Education and Honors, Health and Human Performance, Humanities, Independent
Study, International Studies, Nursing, Physical and Mathematical Sciences
and Religious Education. Over 203 majors are offered.
The athletic teams at Brigham Young University compete in the NCAA
Division I Mountain West Conference.

Recent Highlights:
- The National Soccer Coaches Association of America announced its
preseason rankings for NCAA Division I schools with BYU women weighing
in at No. 24.
- BYU led the Mountain West Conference by having 125 student-athletes
named Academic All-Mountain West out of the 622 honored during the
spring semester. Teams earning spring academic honors were track and
field, swimming and diving, baseball, softball, basketball, golf and
tennis. To be eligible for selection student-athletes must have completed
at least one academic term at BYU while maintaining a cumulative grade
point average of 3.0 or better, and be a starter or significant contributor
on their athletic team.
- On the final day of competition at the 2003 NCAA Track & Field
Championships in Sacramento, Calif., three more Cougars earned All-America
honors, while senior Jaime Cottle, who ran in her final collegiate
competition, set a new BYU record in the 1,500 meters. During the
four-day competition, a total of seven BYU athletes earned All-America
honors, including Trent Powell (pole vault), Chad Simkins (800m),
Cassie Andersen (steeplechase), Lisa Antonelli (steeplechase), Aneta
Lemiesz (800m), Jamie Cottle (1,500m) and Lindsey Metcalf (high jump).
- BYU's head coach Steve Cleveland captured Coach of the Year for
basketball. Four of Cleveland's players joined him in being honored
by the MWC media and coaches. BYU's lone senior Hansen was selected
to the All-MWC First Team, while juniors Mark Bigelow and Rafael Araujo
were voted to the All-MWC Third Team and sophomore Jared Jensen receiving
honorable mention.
- The Mountain Pacific Sports Federation named four members of the
BYU men's volleyball team to Academic All-Conference for the 2003
season. Jon Alleman, Fernando Pessoa, Mike Burke and Luka Slabe received
academic citations for their contributions in the classroom and outstanding
play on this year's MPSF Tournament champion team that earned a second-place
finish in the NCAA Tournament.
- BYU's Dainiel Summerhays (golf) was named Freshman of the Year,
while Glen Millican claimed Coach of the Year accolades.
- BYU outfielder Oli Keohohou and catcher Lauren Watson were named
to the Easton Sports 2003 Softball All-American team. Keohohou was
also named an NFCA All-American last month for the third consecutive
year. Watson's selection marks the first time a Cougar other than
Keohohou has been named an All-American.
