College of Wooster Athletics

The College of Wooster is an independent liberal arts college, founded in 1866 and nationally recognized for an innovative curriculum that emphasizes independent learning. Wooster is located in Wooster, OH (a community of 26,000), approximately 55 miles southwest of Cleveland. Wooster has an enrollment of 1,827 students; the diverse student body represents 47 states and 37 countries. The ratio of student to faculty is 12:1.

Wooster offers more than 40 major programs of study. Independent Study is the most distinctive feature of Wooster's curriculum. For more than 50 years, Independent Study has offered all Wooster students the opportunity to explore what interests them most, and create an original research project, written work, performance or exhibit of artwork, supported one-on-one by a faculty mentor. U.S. News & World Report has ranked Wooster's I.S. program the number two senior capstone experience in the nation, second only to Princeton University.

The athletic teams at Wooster compete in the NCAA Division III North Coast Athletic Conference.

Recent Highlights:

  • Senior back Kelley Hubbell was named to the 2004 STX / National Field Hockey Coaches' Association Division III All-America Third Team. Hubbell earned her first career All-American and regional selections after leading the defense for the Scots. She was instrumental in Wooster's league-leading defense this fall, starting all 19 matches and helping the Scots record six shutouts and allowed just 1.19 goals per game. She also made a team-high seven defensive saves. Hubbell was a big threat offensively as well, scoring three goals and tying for the team lead in assists with seven.
  • College of Wooster running back Tony Sutton headlined the 2004 American Football Coaches’ Association Div. III All-America Team. Sutton also accepted an invitation to the 2005 Hula Bowl and earned first-team All-American honors from Football Gazette, becomes the first Wooster player to be a two-time coaches’ All-American. The AFCA’s is recognized as the most prestigious of the various Div. III All-America Teams because it selects just 25 players – one at each offensive and defensive position and three specialists.
  • The National Soccer Coaches Association of America recently announced its 2004 All-America Teams, and The College of Wooster's Andrew DeBord was named to the second team as a defender. DeBord closes out his career as one of the best defenders in school history, anchoring a defense which held opponents to 0.68 goals and 7.86 shots per match this season. DeBord started all 16 matches while helping Wooster shutout eight of its 16 opponents. In addition, DeBord’s versatility allowed him to be a factor on the offensive end as he recorded eight shots and two assists on the year. With DeBord on the field for the last four years, Wooster claimed two NCAC co-championships and accumulated a record of 51-113-6 overall and 27-7-2 in conference play.
  • The College of Wooster men’s basketball team recently earned the top spot in D3hoops.com poll. Thanks to its school record 13 consecutive wins to begin the season, Wooster (13-0, 4-0) has taken over as the country’s No. 1 team for the first time since Feb. 13, 2001. Wooster has won 10 NCAC regular season titles and nine NCAC Tournament titles in the past 15 years, including finishing in the ‘Final Four’ in 2003 and in the ‘Elite Eight’ in 2004.
  • Led by three individual wins apiece from Elizabeth Roesch and Liz Whittam, The College of Wooster women's swimming and diving team cruised to a first-place finish at the three-day Wooster Invitational, held at Wooster High School's Ellen Shapiro Natatorium December 2-4, 2004. Overall, the Scots were victorious in 13 of the 20 events to easily outdistance the rest of the 11-team field with 1,525 total points.
