Elon University Athletics

Elon is a premier small, private university founded in 1889 by the Christian Church, now the United Church of Christ. Elon has a beautiful, well-maintained campus on more than 500 acres in the town of Elon. It is 30 minutes northwest of Durham and Chapel Hill, N.C., and 20 minutes east of Greensboro. Elon has recently undergone major growth on campus. In July 2002, the renovation of Carlton Building was completed. The building now houses the Isabella Cannon Centre for International Studies, El Centro de Español, a multimedia language media center and the departments of English and foreign languages. The new Isabella Cannon International Studies Pavilion and the Honors Pavilion, the first two buildings in Elon's new Academic Village, opened in August 2002. The buildings provide student housing and faculty apartments, creating a living-learning environment. They also include classrooms as well as a new outdoor amphitheatre. Irwin Belk Track, a new eight-lane, all-weather track and field facility in the North Athletics Complex, opened in August 2002. Two new apartment buildings opened in Danieley Center in August 2002. Each of the buildings houses 32 students in eight four-bedroom, two-bath apartments. Each student has a private bedroom and shares a common living room and kitchen. The $13 million Rhodes Stadium, an on-campus athletics facility, opened in September 2001. The facility seats 8,250.

Elon's programs operate on a 4-1-4 academic calendar, which includes a three-week January term. Elon offers students co-curricular programs called the Elon Experiences: undergraduate research, internships and co-ops, study abroad, leadership and community service. Seventy-eight percent of Elon students complete an internship or co-op work experience before they graduate, more than three times the national average. Students may choose among 49 major fields of study leading to Bachelor of Arts, bachelor of fine arts or Bachelor of Science degrees. A dual-degree engineering program, affiliated with North Carolina State University, Virginia Tech, North Carolina A & T State University and Washington University in St. Louis, allows students to earn undergraduate degrees from both institutions. Majors offered include Accounting, Art, Athletic Training, Biology, Business Administration, Chemistry, Communications, Computer Information Systems, Computer Science, Dance, Economics, Education, Engineering-Dual Degree, English, Environmental Studies, Exercise/Sport Science, French, Health Education, History, Human Services, Independent Major, International Studies, Journalism, Leisure/Sport Management, Mathematics, Medical Technology, Music, Music Education, Music Performance, Music Theatre, Philosophy, Physical Education, Physics, Political Science, Psychology, Public Administration, Religious Studies, Science Education, Social Science Education, Sociology, Spanish, and Theatre Arts.
