California State University, Fresno Athletics

California State University, Fresno was founded as Fresno State Normal School in 1911; it became a teacher’s college in 1921 and has offered advanced degrees since 1949. The university’s nickname is Fresno State.

Fresno State is one of the 23 campuses of the California State University, one of the largest systems of higher education in the world. Its 327-acre main campus and its 1,083-acre University Farm are located at the northeast edge of Fresno, California, at the foot of the majestic Sierra Nevada range. Fresno State is within an hour’s drive of many mountain and lake resorts and within a three- or four-hour drive on Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Fresno State has an enrollment over 20,000 undergraduate and graduate students. The average class size is 20; less than 2 percent of classes had an enrollment over 100 students. The student to faculty ratio is 24:1.

Undergraduate and graduate degrees are offered in the Colleges of Agricultural Science and Technology, Arts and Humanities, Craig School of Business, Kremen School of Education and Human Development, Engineering and Computer Sciences, Health and Human Services, Science and Mathematics, Social Sciences, and Division of Graduate Studies.

The athletic teams at Fresno State compete in the NCAA Division I (I-A football) Western Athletic Conference (WAC).

Recent Highlights:

  • With the success of the Fresno State football team during the 2004 season, several Bulldogs won individual awards in voting by the coached in the WAC. Three Bulldogs were selected to the All-WAC first team, senior offensive tackle Logan Mankins, junior defensive tack Garrett McIntyre and junior strong safety James Sanders. It marked the second straight season Sanders was named to the All-WAC team.
  • The Fresno State wrestling team claimed a third place finish recently at the Reno Tournament of champions. The Bulldogs scored 96 points in the tournament, which featured 19 teams.
  • The Fresno State equestrian team continued its winning streak November 20 when both the English and Western teams earned high point accolades. The Bulldogs garnered a combined 12 first-place finishes for both competitions.
  • The women’s golf team recently finished second in the Cal Poly Sports and Wellness Invitational, two strokes behind champion and host, Cal Poly.
  • Fresno State placed two student-athletes on the 2004 women’s soccer all-WAS teams, with Cortney Sobrero making the first team and fellow sophomore Rochelle Jaqdeo earning second team honors.
